Total Eclipse of the Sun - March 29th, 2006 - Side, Turkey

Eclipse specs (times calculated by Fred Espenak, given in local time):

  • Observed from: Side, Turkey (UT + 3h)
  • C1: 12h38m23.0s
  • C2: 13h55m00.2s
  • Max: 13h56m52.7s
  • C3: 13h58m45.1s
  • C4: 15h13m35.4s

All pictures made with a Canon 350D @ 300mm - f/5.6 - various exposure times. Images are chronological. Partial phase pictures started at 12h30 local time, and are taken 10 minutes apart. Click on totality pictures for full scale image.

The pictures below give a pretty good idea of the darkening of the surrounding around totality. The pictures were made about each 2 minutes, starting from 20 minutes before, until 20 minutes after totality. At the start of this sequence, 20 minutes before totality, the settings of the camera (Canon Powershot G5) were set to 1/250 f/4.0. Of course, it never gets as dark as might be indicated by the 'totality images', but it does get dark enough to give a black picture at the given settings.
